Washington, D.C. The 50501 Movement condemns the Supreme Court’s anti-constitutional and discriminatory ruling in Louisiana v. Callais that allows states to racially gerrymander their elections. In response, the 50501 movement is calling for immediate court reform, including term limits, expanding the Supreme Court to match the number of federal court circuits, and arresting and prosecuting Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito for taking bribes from the billionaires destroying our country.

“The Supreme Court’s Louisiana v. Callais decision spat on the graves of people who fought for this country and bled for equal representation,” said 50501 National Partner and Executive Director of the Voices of Florida, Sarah Parker. “As a Black woman, I’m disgusted by their plan to gut decades of work of civil rights activists. Congressional leadership has failed us by allowing this to happen; we need a radical change in our Supreme Court. The American people are not blind, our movement is not naive, and we will fight back against this.”

Robert’s Racial Obsession

Chief Justice Roberts has spent the past 40 years attempting to overturn the Voting Rights Act. In Shelby County v. Holder (2013), he orchestrated the destruction of Section 4(b) and thereby Section 5, which protected Black and Brown people from discriminatory changes to voting laws, and in 2021, he severely weakened Section 2 protections through Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee. Now, he has completed his mission to hollow out all of the Voting Rights Act’s most important protections for marginalized Americans.

Justice Samuel Alito’s claim that the Court did not overturn the Voting Rights Act, instead merely providing a “proper interpretation” of Section 2, is a bald-faced lie. As Justice Kagan wrote in her dissent, “a plaintiff will have to show—contrary to Section 2’s clear text and design—that the legislators were ‘motivated by a discriminatory purpose,’ [which], as Section 2’s drafters knew, is well-nigh impossible,” thereby substituting the real Voting Rights Act as it exists for a version that only exists within the minds of Justices Roberts, Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett. The Supreme Court has ignored what the law said entirely, replacing it with an entirely new law that did not previously exist.

Workers Over Billionaires

“This ruling is a blatant abdication of duty by the billionaire-bought members of the Supreme Court,” said 50501 National Press Coordinator Hunter Dunn. “The Constitution clearly states that a Supreme Court Justice may only hold office while maintaining good behavior – the Justices interpreting the law in bad faith at the behest of the Epstein Class to disenfranchise millions of Americans must be removed and prosecuted for their betrayal of our country.”

The Supreme Court’s “ruling,” in its absurd rationale, illustrates the need to immediately reform a system that allows nine unaccountable officials to strike down laws based on little more than petty grievances and other personal interests.

In response to the disastrous Louisiana v. Callas ruling, the 50501 Movement is supporting the institution of term limits for Supreme Court Justices, the expansion of the Supreme Court to 13 members (matching the number of federal circuits), the establishment of clear ethical guidelines which, if violated, would lead to the suspension or removal of a Justice, and the arrest and prosecution of the worst offenders, Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.

The 50501 Movement is also calling on the working people of this country to join us and our partners in the May Day Strong coalition for the Workers Over Billionaires National Day of Action on Friday, May 1st, where we are rallying, marching, and taking action to demand a government that expands our democracy instead of crushing Black and Brown people’s voting rights to benefit corporate rule.
